Antique Ningxia Chinese Rug, 1880 ca.

A delightful ancient Chinese Ningxia carpet with a “rock” motif. The carpet is defined by two “sacred mountain” motif borders only on the shorter sides. The decorated part almost provide a three-dimensional and depth of field effect. The main subject of this carpet is the horse in its natural habitat, in this case a delightful field with trees and shrubs and small floral motifs. The dynamism and vitality of some elements is surprising; from a horse you can almost hear its neighing; two foals seem to play together almost intertwining. The “cut” of the design, without borders on the sides, represents irrefutable proof of the extremely high mastery and sensitivity in the decorative, almost photographic approach.
