Textile Description

This is an ultra-rare 18th century or earlier imperial textile fragment from China. It has been made using velvet, silk, and metal threads. The field design incorporates lotus flowers interconnected with vines accompanied by bat and cloud band motifs. The scale of the field motifs is extra-large and the drawing is highly spacious and made with exact precision.

The first minor border is made from dragons whose bodies become entangled in a geometric spiral design. The major border fuses the “T” and swastika design to create a highly intricate border that draws the views eye to it. The design of the textile is made using a flatweave technique while the background is made using a velvet piled technique and the gray color is made using metal threads.
