Antique Hand Knotted Under Horse Saddle Tibetan Rug, XIX century. A truly rare Tibetan saddle rug, so-called “butterfly” due to its shape. These are two small carpets knotted separately and then joined together. The colors are bright and warm at the same time. The red background color enhances the motif of the lotus flower that rises from the rainbow of clouds in variations of shades of blue. The lotus in Buddhist and Taoist symbolism represents purity and perfection. The border on an ivory background is rich and detailed and contains small floral motifs in scrolls that alternate in contrast and in the filling motifs. The “pearl” motif runs both on the minor border and on the background to accompany and strengthen the twisting of the lotus flower stem.
