Rug Description

This ancient Chinese carpet knotted in the Ningxia area in the 18th century measures 290 × 196 cm (9′ 6″ × 6′ 5″). From traditional Chinese iconography the decoration takes flower in vases and boxes, clouds, shrubs, tree branches and the indomitable guardian lion, also known as Buddha’s dog or foo dog who walks confidently with open jaws, a thick mane and a vivid gaze, a defense against both harmful spiritual influences and people with evil intentions. The band of clouds adorning both ends can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) and represents the opening to the celestial realm. The wool pile, dyed with natural vegetable colours, is knotted on a cotton warp and weft. The carpet has the typical light and soft texture of Ningxia area, in exceptional condition considering its age. Really striking is the extraordinary dynamism of the whole which makes it perfect for animating your ambience.
