Rug Description

A Small Antique Chinese Ningxia, 1900 ca. A small rarity in the varied panorama of Chinese carpets attributed to Ningxia, a city in the province of Gansu. Carpets attributed to Ningxia appear in literature as early as 1692. Normally their ground color is yellow or blue. In this particular case, we find a bright red background embellished with a colorful circular medallion in the center, with two rosettes arranged between the 2 counter-edges made with the rather angular cloud motif. The very rich border combines all the colors present in the central medallion, creating a dense floral composition. Carpets from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have less dense knotting than their older cousins, with around 40 asymmetric knots per square inch on a cotton base. The carpet is framed with a red ribbon on all sides. This ancient Ninxia was probably used as a seating rug. Good state of conservation, corrosion and small worn areas.
