Rug Description

Antique Souf Persian Kashan Rug, 1880 ca. Carpets in the souf technique, flat weaving on which relief motifs are knotted, are particularly known in ancient Kashan carpets. These very particular artefacts, of the highest quality and value, represent a sort of quality “brand” in Kashan carpets, the result of continuous research and stylistic evolution of the great Persian knotting masters. The design of this Kashan souf, on a cream background, develops unidirectionally culminating in a niche decorated with amaranth arabesques on an ivory background. The border is very refined and well distributed along its entire length. The small twigs are sublimely decorated with contrasts and proportions allowing the frame to anticipate the “sculptural” design of the background rich in floral motifs and small birds that all develop around the vase on the base. In the center another motif connecting with the lateral “ramages”, a small and very detailed rosette and just below the niche (mirhab) another rosette with pendant to embellish the modularity of the floral design on the sides. In this Kashan souf, we could spend hours and hours examining all the nuances of the details, remaining surprised and enraptured by such refinement. A highly collectible rug and timeless beauty.
