Antique Persian Kashan Silk, A Pair of Purple All-over floral Rugs, 1880-1900. Persian Kashan silk carpets from the early 20th century have had a very prolific decorative artistic development, rich in styles and chromatic “effects” that rank them among the most appreciated works of textile art in the world. Kashan has always been an important city for the production of carpets and for silk carpets it has stood out with undisputed authority. Finding a pair or two twin rugs of this size and quality is quite rare. Important carpets made in couples were often produced as a wedding gift or as an important embassy gift. These two silk Kashans have a refinement and at the same time a particularly modern avant-garde vision of its chromatic appearance. On a purple background, a floral design develops, small bouquets and palmettes, all over the field in which every contrast is perfectly arranged in balance with the entire graphic composition. The contrast obtained with the border is decidedly elegant and “sophisticated”. Thinking that these masterpieces are over a century old helps us to further appreciate the great mastery and extremely high artistic sensitivity of the master knotter, visionary in imagining the desired chromatic effect once the carpet is finished.
