Antique Persian Bakhtiari Carpet, 1900-1920. Bakhtiari carpets are perhaps still too little known as high quality carpets with a very long tradition in carpet manufacturing. The Bakhtiary, together with the Qashqai confederation, are considered among the oldest inhabitants of present-day Iran. There are many carpets made for the “khan” of this ethnic group. In this magnificent example, we notice a stylistic contamination that was particularly popular between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, namely the typical “gul farang” (French flower), used as a decoration in Savonnarie and Aubusson carpets. In this Bakhtiari, we can appreciate a stylistic syncretism that blends together the Persian decorative style and that of European origin. In the main border the rose motif in typical French style follows one another harmoniously, framing the all-round design on a yellow ocher background. The pattern of the carpet is well modulated and proportionate in terms of chromatic tones and decorative elements used. In this Bakhtiari the light field certainly represents a rarity, the small medallions containing cypresses are interesting, almost symbolizing cameos. The floral decorations are very well executed and the alternation of flowers with branches is truly refined.
